Is a security deposit required?

Yes, all car companies require a security deposit on a major credit card (not debit cards or cash).

Should I pay in Euros or my home currency?

Always pay in Euros! Avoid Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) where merchants choose unfavorable exchange rates. Let your credit card company handle the conversion for better rates.

Are your rates guaranteed?

What insurance is included?

All our rates include:

  • CDW (Collision Damage Waiver)
  • TP (Theft Protection)

You will only be responsible for the excess or deductible amount, which varies depending on the car type and rental company.

If you possess a credit card with primary coverage, it may provide you with protection in the event of an accident or damage. We recommend checking with your Visa or Mastercard to confirm whether your card includes primary coverage.

Additionally, American Express offers a Rental Premium Insurance option, which requires enrollment and costs approximately $25 per rental. This is considered one of the top choices for rental car coverage.

If you choose to utilize the insurance provided by your credit card, please be aware of the following important steps in the event of an accident:

  1. Contact the Police is mandatory: It is essential to call the police and obtain an official police report (known as “auto da polícia” in Portuguese).
  2. Document the Incident: Take clear photographs of the accident scene and any damages incurred.
  3. Keep All Relevant Documentation: Retain the receipt detailing the amount you paid for the damages at the car rental.
  4. Submit Original Documents: Ensure that you provide all original documents to your credit card insurance provider; copies will not be accepted.

It’s important to note that major car companies like Avis block (300 euros), Europcar (1.000 euros), Sixt (1.000 euros), and Guerin (600 euros) typically only block minimum amounts on economy cars nowadays. In contrast, smaller companies outside of airports often block the full amount of the deductible/excess, starting at 1500 euros.

Should I inspect the car?

Absolutely! Always:

  • Do a complete walk-around
  • Take photos and video of any existing damage
  • Document everything before leaving and make sure damages show also on paperwork

This protects you from surprise damage claims later.

How do fuel policies work?

Major companies (Sixt, Avis, Guerin, Hertz, Dollar, Europcar, Ilha Verde):
